Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948 in the city of Faisalabad, Pakistan. He was the fifth child and first son of Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, a distinguished and legendary musicologist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and Qawwal. Nusrat's family, which included his four older sisters and his younger brother, Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan grew in central Lyallpur, in a small flat which was rented from a local businessman.

Today is the 67th birthday of one of the greatest Qawwali singer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; and Google pays a tribute to him by its customized doodle.

The doodle showcases a Qawwali (Sufi music) in which Mr Khan is portrayed singing with a mic in front of him; in the background we see other Qawwali walas (singers/ musicians) sitting, singing and playing various instruments like Harmonium and Tabla. The representation of Google's logo is done in a very Arabic manner; you get the feeling of "Arabian Nights" after seeing it.

There are great singers, and then there are those few voices that transcend time. The late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan could not only transcend time, but also language and religion. There was magic when he opened his mouth, a sense of holy ecstasy that was exciting and emotional. It wasn’t uncommon even for Western listeners, who didn’t understand a word he was singing or follow his Sufi traditions, to be moved to tears upon hearing him.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is popularly known as 'The King of Kings' of Qawwali. His impact has led to him being honoured in 2017 with a BBC Music Day Blue Plaque in Birmingham.

As a singer he gave sensational performances with an other-worldy voice and could perform for long periods of time maintaining intensity, and emotion. He's widely credited with introducing Qawwali music to international audiences, and has been dubbed the 'Elvis of the East'.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Pakistani singer whose thrilling voice carried Sufi devotional songs to the world, died yesterday in London. He was 48.
Mr. Khan, who suffered from problems with his liver and his weight, came to London last week for medical and business reasons. He was rushed to the Cromwell Hospital from the airport and later suffered cardiac arrest there, The Associated Press reported.
